The image of Ty Pennington’s smiling face on American television screens is a welcome one – an image that promises to bring hope, change, and a little excitement. Ty Pennington burst into stardom and living rooms everywhere – both virtually and in person – when he became the host of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on ABC. Ty’s combination of his creative carpentry skills and his enthusiastic personality made the show a hit. It lasted for nine seasons and won two Emmys and two People’s Choice Awards. Later, Ty went on to host and produce Ty’s Great British Adventure, which had two seasons that became UKTV Home’s two highest rated television series of all time.
Ty Pennington was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. At age 17 he was diagnosed with ADHD, and he has since been an active advocate for ADHD treatment. After high school, Pennington channeled his creativity and passion for carpentry into earning a diploma in commercial art from The Art Institute of Atlanta. Pennington then went on to work as a model for companies like J. Crew, Sprite, Levi’s, and Macy’s, and was able to travel the world through his modeling career.
Pennington got his first break in entertainment in 1995 by designing sets for the movie Leaving Las Vegas. He moved onto the screen and into the spotlight in 2000 when he began starring on The Learning Channel’s popular show, Trading Spaces. He charmed audiences as the show’s designer and carpenter for four years before eventually moving on to celebrity status when he became the host of ABC’s hit program Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in 2003. After nine seasons of warming the hearts of millions by bringing together communities to improve lives and homes, Pennington put his creative talents into other television series, including Inside the Box with Ty Pennington in Canada, as well as Ty’s Great British Adventure and Homes for the Brave in the U.K., the latter being dedicated to home improvement for British soldiers who served in Afghanistan.
Pennington has published two books about design and do-it-yourself projects. He has launched four designer lines including a fabric line with Westminster Fabrics, a contemporary furniture line with Howard Miller, a seasonal home décor line with Sears, and a flooring collection with Lumber Liquidators.
