  • Jason Jennings' research team has studied more than 220,000 companies to identify best practices in business speed, productivity, growth, and innovative leadership. 2. Jennings' six best-selling business books have popularized the phrases “less is more” and “think big, act small” and the concept of business “reinventers.” 3. Jennings has more than 30 takeaways from years of analysis into companies and business leaders across the globe. 4. He is the author of seven bestsellers, gives nearly 100 customized presentations a year, and has studied hundreds of thousands of companies and individuals to learn what makes them innovative and successful.

USA TODAY calls Research Jason Jennings one of the three most in-demand business speakers on the planet. Jennings began his career as a radio and television reporter and was the youngest radio station group-owner in the nation. He founded Jennings-McGlothlin & Company, a firm that became the world’s largest media consultancy and whose programming and sales strategies revolutionized the broadcasting industry. His breakthrough research has looked at more than 220,000 companies and developed 30 major discoveries about great companies and leaders.

His first book, It's Not the Big That Eat the Small—It’s the Fast That Eat the Slow, was on the Wall Street Journal and New York Times bestsellers lists for weeks, was named by USA Today one of the top 25 books of 2002, and was published in 32 languages. In his groundbreaking Less Is More, he and his research team identified the world’s 10 most productive companies and analyzed what makes them so. In Think BIG—Act Small, the book features the only 10 companies in the world to have organically grown both revenue and profit by double-digits for 10 consecutive years. His next book, Hit the Ground Running—A Manual for Leaders, reveals tactics and strategies of the 10 CEOs who created the greatest amount of value during their first five years on the job. The Reinventors—How Extraordinary Companies Pursue Radical Continuous Change reveals the secrets of leaders and organizations that have successfully reinvented and transformed themselves, and his latest book, The High Speed Company – Creating Urgency and Growth in a Nanosecond Culture, immediately climbed and has stayed on the bestseller list.

Jennings also joined forces with well-known cardiologist Dr. John Kennedy and co-authored the 2010 health, mind and body bestseller, The 15-Minute Heart Cure—The Natural Way to Release Stress and Heal Your Heart in 15 Minutes a Day.

Jennings has high energy and is a lifetime learner. He has taught himself five languages, is an avid business and adventure traveler, and he challenges himself to play new pieces on his viola whenever he’s not traveling. He and his family split their time between Tiburon, California, and their lake house on Michigan’s remote northern peninsula.

ON SPEAKING
Jason Jennings I love taking the complicated and making it simple and having people say, “Aha, I get that and see how I can use it in my life and in my business.”

CORE Agency What do you want people to learn/take away from your presentations?

Jason Jennings
The result of all the research for my books is that my teams and I have landed on about thirty huge discoveries about great companies and great leaders. You can’t include all thirty in a sixty to ninety minute speech, so I generally include five BIG discoveries: those I feel are most appropriate for that audience.

Generally, I introduce each big point then try and make it come alive for the audience through rich and compelling storytelling. I love taking the complicated and making it simple and having people say, “Aha, I get that and see how I can use it in my life and in my business.” If someone walks out of a speech with several key, actionable takeaways they can begin using immediately, I have done my job.

But, there’s one more thing that I try and deliver on in a keynote speech, and its best illustrated by a story.

Some years ago, I’d just finished doing a speech at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel and was walking down the street with the agent who’d booked the event. As we walked along, he suddenly stopped, bumped fists with me and said, “That was the best motivational speech I’ve ever heard.”

I said, “What are you talking about? I’m not a motivational speaker. I talk about real world findings and bring them to life,” adding, “I deliver solid takeaways.”

He said, and I’ll never forget his words, which were a most valuable lesson for me.

Do I make people feel good about themselves? I sure try hard to deliver on that one, too. It’s an oath I’ve taken.

“There were hundreds of people in that room, and let me tell you about them,” he said. “Some of them had a fight with their husband or wife last night. Somebody else’s kid got in trouble. More than a few were yelled at by a boss. Someone in one of the families received a horrible medical diagnosis yesterday, and yes, some came in with a great attitude wanting to learn how to achieve their full potential as a leader. Your job as a speaker is to uplift everyone, make them feel good about themselves and let them believe they can succeed despite all the $%#^ that people and life throw at them.”

Do I deliver the goods? Yes! Am I funny and poke some fun at myself? I hope so.

Do I make people feel good about themselves? I sure try hard to deliver on that one, too. It’s an oath I’ve taken.

CORE Agency What kind of special prep work do you do prior to an event? How do you prepare for your speaking engagements?

Jason Jennings
Once I agree to work with a company, I conduct a sixty to ninety minute diagnostic/discovery call with the person/committee/group that hired me. I want to know and learn about the company, the audience, the key learning objectives and everything about the event.

Next, I have a call with the CEO or owner. At the conclusion of every event, all the executives, all the key people and the meeting planner are going to look to the top dog to learn whether it was a success or not. When the head person jumps on stage, hugs me and says, “This is greatest speech we’ve ever seen.” Everyone comes out a winner. That can only happen if I’ve heard the story of the company from them, if I have successfully learned about the challenges facing them and if I know where he or she is trying to take the company.

Finally, I conduct ten other telephone interviews with people who will be in attendance. By the time I’ve completed my prep work, they will have a speech based on solid research and their specific needs.

Last year, something happened that still keeps me smiling every day. The phone rang in my office one morning so I glanced down at caller ID and saw the call was coming from another well-known author and speaker, and so I answered it with, “Hello, this is Jason.”

The person, and you’d know his name, said, “What in the hell are you trying to do?”

I said, “Excuse me, what are you talking about?”

He said, “Last year you did a series of speeches for Eaton around the country, and this year they’ve hired me, and they expect me to do all the same %^&* prep work you did last year,” adding, “you’re ruining it for everyone else.”

Every speaking trip is memorable in more ways than you can imagine.

CORE Agency Have you had any particularly memorable speaking engagements / unusual situations arise while on the road?

Jason Jennings
Are you referring to the time that I was just moments into a speech to a huge YPO gathering in Las Vegas at the Venetian Hotel when the power went off and stayed off for forty-five minutes and, when the power came back on, the meeting planner told me, “You have eight minutes to finish your speech.”?

Or are you referring to the time that I checked into a hotel, sent one of my two suits out for dry cleaning and was steaming my suit for the next morning’s speech in the shower and went into the bathroom and discovered it at the bottom of the tub in eighteen inches of water at midnight?

Perhaps you’re referring to twelve years ago, the last time I checked luggage. When I arrived in Des Moines, Iowa, my luggage was lost, and I was wearing jeans, a t-shirt and sneakers and had to go shopping for a suit, shirt, tie and shoes at Wal-Mart because it was the only thing open.

Maybe you’re referring to the night where I’d just flown into Chicago from Australia, was having a very bad night’s sleep, got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, opened the bathroom door, walked in, closed the door behind me and found myself naked and locked out of my room in the hallway of a Marriott Hotel, and the only way they’d let me back into my room – remember I had no ID – was by calling the meeting planner to make certain I was who I said I was.

Every speaking trip is memorable in more ways than you can imagine.

Business is about having a purpose, finding, keeping, engaging and growing the right people, building a culture of exceeding the expectations of the right customers and doing all those things while being profitable and rewarding the shareholder.

CORE Agency What types of audiences would most benefit from your message?

Jason Jennings
Everyone wants to believe that their business is different and unique. That’s simply not true. If I had a dollar for every time someone has told me, “My market is different or my business is different,” I wouldn’t have to work anymore.

Business is about having a purpose, finding, keeping, engaging and growing the right people, building a culture of exceeding the expectations of the right customers and doing all those things while being profitable and rewarding the shareholder. Any company that acknowledges their people are their only real asset would benefit from what I talk about.

CORE Agency What inspired you to start doing speaking engagements?

Jason Jennings
When my first book hit the New York Times bestsellers list, the calls started pouring in. I never set out to be a speaker. It was all kind of accidental.

Today, my life is 25% conducting research, 25% writing, 25% speaking and teaching and 25% devoted to family, adventure travel, studying and playing my Viola, studying and speaking Spanish and hitting the gym six days a week.

I’m based in California in a small village in the SF Bay area, but several months a year we’re based at our dream home, a log and stone lodge on a private lake in northern Michigan, near the Canadian border, where Hemingway wrote a couple of his books.

CORE Agency What are some of the successes you've helped clients achieve?

Jason Jennings
Two years ago a huge design and build engineering firm hired me for a half day program. It was a ninety-minute keynote, followed by ninety minutes of small group discussions on the points I covered. Then, every small group selected a spokesperson and each reported to the full audience. In addition to the keynote, I facilitated the discussion groups and the reports back to the full audience. He called me three months ago and during the conversations he told me that the work I did with his company has meant at least two billion dollars in additional revenues.

Just imagine if I’d done that speech in return for ten percent of their improved performance.

I love what I do!

Every morning I look in the mirror and say, “Thank you for allowing me to do what I do,” and I mean it.

Jason′s 5 secrets of the world′s fastest and most productive companies became the talk of the conference and why wouldn′t it? His engaging speech on the "five leadership secrets of the world′s fastest growing and productive companies" was a huge hit with all the leadership teams in our Asian subsidiaries. The feedback from our diverse participants was unanimously positive. Jason′s research and first-hand experiences with the successful companies referenced in your books brought tremendous credibility to his key messages. It′s often difficult to turn "theory" into "practice", but Jason made that leap easy with his adroitly sprinkled real-world examples. The acid test has been that we frequently hear people cite what they heard and internalized during Jason′s speech."

Keynote Speeches

The Five Secrets of the World’s Best-performing Companies and Leaders

This is the crowd pleaser that’s received standing ovations from hundreds of thousands of people around the world. Jennings’ research has revealed five vital leadership traits shared by the best-performing businesses and organizations. This dynamic and information-packed speech not only provides the roadmap for achieving long-lasting business success, but helps attendees believe they are capable of carrying out the mission ahead of them. This speech can be presented as a 60-or 90-minute keynote—with or without Q&A—and can also be delivered as a highly interactive half-day or full-day program.

Reinvention – The Six Secrets of Change

This keynote is based on Jennings' book The Reinventors—How Extraordinary Companies Pursue Radical Continual Change, which examines more than 100 companies that have made constant change part of their DNA. By examining innovative businesses such as Apple, Capital One, Starbucks, Arrow Electronics, Nucor Steel, Smithfield Foods and many more, Jennings has identified six points that helps businesses crack the code on change. In this talk, Jennings reveals these key findings: double-digit annual growth, letting go of yesterday’s breadwinners, conventional wisdom and ego, making lots of small bets, and getting and keeping everyone on the same page. This speech can be presented as a 60-or 90-minute keynote—with or without Q&A—and can also be delivered as a half-day or full-day program.

The Need for Speed – How to Get Everything Done Faster

This presentation is based on content from the New York Times bestseller It’s Not the Big That Eat the Small—It’s the Fast That Eat the Slow, named by USA TODAY as one of the 25 most important books of the early 2000s. This brutally honest, fast-paced speech provides a roadmap to getting things done once attendees go home. This speech can be presented as a 60-or 90-minute keynote—with or without Q&A—and also can be delivered as a highly interactive half-day or full-day program.

BEST-SELLING BOOKS

The Reinventors: How Extraordinary Companies Pursue Radical Continuous Change
Eventually every job and every business will become irrelevant. According to Jason Jennings, the past few decades have seen unprecedented shifts; former third-world nations have transformed themselves into high-tech manufacturing powerhouses; technology has democratized business and increased competition in ways never before seen; and customers, used to getting exactly what they want when they want it, are no longer beholden to the corporate giants.

Jennings and his research team examined thousands of articles and news stories and selected the 100 best examples of companies, including Best Buy, Cirque du Soleil, and Avon, that have successfully reinvented themselves. After interviewing the key players in these transformations, Jennings established what he calls the "reinvention rules," including:

  • Abandon all ego: Being a master of conventional thinking yields conventional results.
  • Take lots of small chances: Small bets allow you to see what works-and what doesn′t-without putting your neck on the line.
  • Be frugal: The best companies know how to fix problems and effect change using the resources already available.
  • Grow constantly: If you want to nurture and retain your best people, you need to make sure you can give them opportunities that will make them want to stay.

With the same friendly style of Jennings′s previous titles, this book is a must-read for any leader who wants to stay relevant for years to come.

Hit the Ground Running: A Manual for New Leaders Lessons from ten dramatic transformations and the new CEOs who led them

One of the toughest jobs in business is taking over as a new leader. You have to hit the ground running- diagnose the situation, pull together a strong team, decide on a strategy, and inspire everyone to execute it.

He interviewed ten who, on average, had doubled revenues, doubled profit margins, and more than tripled earnings per share, at companies such as Staples, Goodrich, Humana, and J. M. Smucker.

The result: ten new "golden rules" that can help leaders balance the short term and the long term, and the competing needs of shareholders, employees, customers, and the community. They include:

    • Drive stakes in the ground
    • Have a fierce sense of urgency
    • Simplify everything
