Book Lucien Engelen
- Physician and director of the Radboud REshape & Innovation Center at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands.
- Champion of patients as the single most important resource in the contemporary world of health care.
- Advocate and innovator of exciting new technology allowing patients to take a more active role in caring for their health.
Dr. Lucien Engelen believes that patients themselves are the biggest resource in the world of health care, and he’s dedicated to improving the capacity of individuals and networks to maximize this resource. As director of the Radboud REshape & Innovation Centre at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands, Dr. Engelen studies how new technology can revitalize existing care models in an atmosphere of rising health care demand, staff shortages, and limited finances.
Dr. Engelen, a physician, seeks to develop technologies that allow patients to take a more active role in caring for their health. He has pioneered innovations that allow patients to speak directly with their health care providers over a Skype-like network that provides adequate provision for patient privacy. His center has developed an online community for young cancer patients where they can share information and support in a secure environment.
The rise of the Internet has revolutionized and democratized travel and music; Dr. Engelen believes similar change is underway in the field of medicine. Patients and their family members are also expert in the diseases they experience, and technology provides the tools to establish networks that capitalize upon the power of this experience.
In addition to his work at Radboud, Engelen is on the faculty of Silicon Valley’s Singularity University.
