  • Hollywood veteran with over 20 years of experience acting in such iconic films as Armageddon and When Harry Met Sally.
  • Son of President Gerald Ford, Steve Ford embarked on life as a cowboy at age 18 – with a 10-man Secret Service escort.
  • Prolific and admired youth speaker, sharing a message of overcoming temptations, his own struggle with alcohol addiction and living life with integrity.
  • Talented storyteller with an eye for the humor in his unique life experiences.

Steve Ford left Washington, D.C. as a teenager to pursue his dreams of the American West. From work as a cowboy to a highly successful acting career, Ford “made it” in some of our nation’s most romantic careers, but he also “made it” successfully past obstacles ranging from alcohol addiction to the rather unconventional trouble of riding the range with the help of ten Secret Service agents. Steve Ford, you see, is also the son of former President Gerald Ford.

Ford was a teenager when President Richard Nixon resigned and his family found themselves in the unexpected position of living in the White House. At 18, he left the East to pursue his dream of becoming a cowboy. Unfortunately, as his father was still president, he left accompanied by a Secret Service detail. Ford went on to enjoy a 20-year career as a successful Hollywood actor, appearing in over 30 movies including Contact, Armageddon, Starship Troopers, Eraser, Heat, and When Harry Met Sally. Ford also did television work, including a six-year stint on the Emmy-Award winning soap opera The Young and the Restless, the NBC program Secret Service, and guest appearances on shows such as JAG; Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman; and Suddenly Susan.

Ford’s unusual journey toward adulthood has equipped him with unique insight into the temptations young people face. One of his most fulfilling roles has been traveling the country to speak with students about the experiences that led to his alcoholism – and the tools and decisions that helped him regain a life of integrity and sobriety.

A sojourn in the White House, time on the range, and two decades in Hollywood left Ford with more than a few stories to tell. He enjoys sharing inspiring accounts of how his family coped with mother Betty Ford’s breast cancer and alcoholism, the aftermath of his father’s pardon of Richard Nixon, life in Hollywood behind the scenes – and even of those ten Secret Service agents he transformed into buckaroos.

Few people have lived the life Steve Ford has lived, from finding himself the son of a president to a 20-year Hollywood career working with some of the industry’s biggest names. With a quick wit and ready humor, he shares stories of how he got into the film industry – as a rodeo rider, he was good at falling off horses, and he got a summer doing just that on the set of a Western – and of his experiences as part of a White House family. “It’s just surreal, that our family got catapulted into the White House,” Ford relates, observing that in contrast to such political ‘royalty’ as the Reagan and Bush families, nobody would ever have put money on Gerald Ford landing in the Oval Office.

Even more important to Ford than these experiences, however, is a project he took on later in life. “I went through a huge change myself about 9 years ago,” he shares. “I had three people, three very special people, stand in front of me and challenge me.” They challenged him, Ford says, “to step away from your acting career and do something different to be of service, to add more value to your life.”

“I listened to them and I did,” explains. “I walked away from my acting career for about two or three years to go be of service.” Traveling the country, Ford spent his time speaking to middle school kids, high school audiences, and college students about drugs and alcohol, sharing the Ford family’s experiences and offering his insight borne of experience with 65,000 youth.
