During his U.S. Navy career, George Dom’s skill and expertise carried him into the highest echelons of some of the military’s most prestigious units. A former naval officer and aviator who led four aircraft carrier fighter squadrons and commanded the air wing of the U.S.S. John F. Kennedy, Dom served as commanding officer/flight leader of the Blue Angels and as an instructor and pilot in the Navy Fighter Weapons School – “Topgun” school.

Dom parlayed his years in the service into work as a business aviation consultant, and his NFS Advisors offers advice to organizations and individuals considering the purchase of a corporate jet. Most significantly, however, Dom realized that while the thrill of piloting a fighter jet is a unique privilege, the most important lessons he took from his naval career were in successfully developing high-performance leaders and teams. After all, there is no such thing as “lateral entry” in the Navy – leadership development must come from within the ranks.

Having recognized the importance of developing high-trust leadership and focused engagement in professions far outside the realm of the military, Dom seeks to share his wisdom with others. With regular, intentional effort, a culture of trust and of fully engaged “wingmen” can develop at all levels of an organization. In order to be trusted, you must be trustworthy. Organizations that make individual and collective trustworthiness a core value will break out and dominate competitors who don’t. There are five key ingredients to earn a high level of trust – character, commitment, competence, connection, and communication.

In addition to independent research, I speak to client representatives in order to understand their objectives and themes for their event, and after one or two preparatory calls I am able to effectively tailor my presentation to each audience. I seek to make them as relatable and beneficial as possible.

George Dom is a man who understands the importance of trust. Flying off aircraft carriers and in tight formation with the Blue Angels requires absolute trust – fellow pilots must have total assurance in the trustworthiness of their fellow pilots and their ground crews. It’s easy to see the importance of trust when you’re buzzing along at 700 miles an hour with another F-18 on your wingtip, but Dom helps his audiences recognize that trust is essential to high-performance leadership and teamwork in any line of work.

High-Performance Leadership and Teamwork
In the knowledge-based economy, high performance is all about relationships, strong and enduring relationships with all stakeholders, and the fundamental ingredient for every successful relationship is trust.

For naval aviators, flying off aircraft carriers a thousand miles from land (often in the middle of the night) trust is essential not just success, but survival. There can be no compromise in that extreme laboratory of high performance. If you weren’t trusted, you’d fail or be fired; if you can’t trust others, you’ll either fail or look for another line of work.

Trust is the cornerstone to be an effective leader; it’s the glue that keeps the team firing on all cylinders. Within a culture of trust, there is an upward spiral of achievement based on creativity, determination, accountability, excellence, passion, camaraderie, humor, candor, and resilience.
