Ben Casnocha begins his talk by comparing an all-too familiar scenario in today’s business world—that of letting an employee go—with the dangers of referring to a company as family. He goes on to describe the successful cycle of hiring word-class employees through three key steps: recruiting, managing, and retaining. “To do those things, you need to have an alliance framework,” Casnocha says. “Within the alliance framework, you want to choreograph the progressive levels of commitment in the employer-employee relationship using what we call ‘tours of duty.’”

“There’s going to be a new pact that defines the relationship between employer and employee,” Casnocha says, “because the old compact—the idea that this employee shows up to work, totally untrained and totally 'unentrepreneurial', and pledges his life-long loyalty to your company in exchange for being trained and told what to do, and utter job security—that relationship has disintegrated. What’s replaced it is a new compact based on alliance more than loyalty.”

He goes on to say that the alliance acknowledges that the creative and adaptive superstars that managers want to hire are going to have certain entrepreneurial tendencies that need to be cultivated, embraced and channeled to benefit the company.

The Alliance: Managing Talent in the Networked Age

Introducing the new, realistic loyalty pact between employer and employee. The employer-employee relationship is broken, and managers face a seemingly impossible dilemma: the old model of guaranteed long-term employment no longer works in a business environment defined by continuous change, but neither does a system in which every employee acts like a free agent. The solution? Stop thinking of employees as either family or as free agents. Think of them instead as allies.
