- Comedienne Joy Behar has fine-tuned the humorous and motivational delivery of her life story for more than 20 years.
- As co-host for 19 years of one of daytime TV’s most popular shows, comedienne Joy Behar has created hours of material based on her interviews with thousands of people in politics and pop culture.
- Joy Behar customizes her speeches by anticipating what audiences want to hear, and then hitting all the comedic hot buttons to keep them motivated and entertained.
Although comedienne Joy Behar keeps people laughing with her keen observations and acerbic wit, she also knows the value of hard work and persistence. When she decided to leave her teaching career to become a comedian, Behar took a job as a receptionist at “Good Morning America,” and worked her way up to a producer of the show. She started at the lesser known comedy clubs, but moved to the more elite clubs before finally landing the role of co-host on “The View,” an ABC daytime talk show, where she has remained for 19 seasons.
Behar grew up in New York City, earned a BA in sociology from Queens College in 1964, and a MA in English education from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. For nearly 10 years, she taught English at a New York high school before giving up teaching to pursue her dream of a career in comedy. She appeared on ABC's “Good Morning America” and other talk shows, worked in comedy clubs, was a regular on NBC's “Baby Boom,” made several theater appearances, and had minor film roles in a handful of movies. She also has had three shows of her own and currently hosts “Late Night Joy” on TLC, which features Behar and friends chatting in her New York City apartment.
In 1997, Behar became a co-host on “The View.” In 2009, after a decade of nominations, Behar, her co-hosts, and the show finally won a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host. In 2013, Behar announced she would leave the show at the end of the season, but she continued to guest co-host throughout 2014 and 2015. Behar returned to the show as a full-time co-host in September 2015.
Behar has written two books: A collection of humorous essays and stories called Joy Shtick – Or What is the Existential Vacuum and Does It Come with Attachments? and When You Need a Lift But Don't Want to Eat Chocolate, Pay a Shrink, or Drink a Bottle of Gin, where she and her friends share simple, silly, profound, and personal things they turn to for comfort when life gets hard. She has also written two children's books (Sheetzucacapoopoo: My Kind of Dog, and Sheetzucacapoopoo: Max Goes to the Dogs). Behar won the GLAAD Excellence in Media Award in 2010, and has been nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host on “The View” every year from 1998 to 2011.
“What you see is what you get” probably best describes Joy Behar’s comedic programs. The big personality on “The View” and Behar’s show on HLN is the same personality that keeps her audiences laughing through an entire live presentation. Weaving humor throughout her motivational program, Behar calls on her life story to share how persistence and hard work, the belief in second chances, and being open to opportunities can change lives.
During her presentations, Behar shares with the audience about her leap of faith from high school teacher to television host, how she juggles family and work, her take on current events, and insights into people she’s interviewed and worked with over the years. Behar customizes her material for the audience, but is always entertaining.
So What, Who Cares? Working Hard to Make You Laugh
Joy Behar appears in millions of households as the hilarious co-host of the popular daytime talk show “The View” and host TLC’s “Late Night Joy,” a cross between a traditional late night show and a reality TV show. Before she headlined those shows, Behar was a high school English teacher and a single mother who overcame her fear, trusted her talent, and worked her way up the late-night comedy club circuit. She took a day job as a receptionist at “Good Morning America” and made the most of an opportunity with Steve Allen, and then made the most of the next opportunity, and the next… All the while, she worked hard to make audiences laugh. In this speech, Behar shares her motivational message and uplifting personal story.
An Evening with Joy Behar
When Behar talks at an event, it doesn’t need to be scripted. A seasoned stand-up comedienne, Behar is quick on her feet, but even quicker with her wit. She is a pro at quickly reading and connecting with her audience, and making them laugh. Behar’s humor and pulse on the people and events in the news make her an ideal emcee for fundraisers, a motivational keynoter, or just for a night of laughs.

Joy Shtick
Joy Behar never minces words. Her unique words of wisdom are "truly funny" (The New York Times), and in Joy Shtick she puts pen to paper with the same acerbic wit she brings to her stand-up comedy routines. In essays, advice, musings, and a round-up of random thoughts, Joy rants about men, marriage, diets, family, being female, and much more. With her trademark tell-it-like-it-is style, Joy exposes the absurdities of the human condition as only she can, making us laugh, like all great comedy does, at ourselves. Whether recalling her stint as a secretary at
