In his 20s, Conley’s mission was to “create joy” by building a company of delightful and unique boutique hotels. Over his next several decades as CEO of Joie de Vivre (JDV), the company grew to become the second largest boutique hotel company in the world. Conley has become known as a leader in developing, creating, and managing boutique hotels across the country.

In his book, PEAK: How Great Companies Get Their Mojo from Maslow, Conley shares his unique prescription for success. He bases his ideas on noted psychologist Abraham Maslow’s classic Hierarchy of Needs. In his New York Times bestseller, EMOTIONAL EQUATIONS: Simple Truths for Creating Happiness + Success, Conley highlights emotional fluency, which places meaning at the top of the balance sheet. He also has written two additional books. Conley has presented his theories on transformation and meaning in business and life to audiences around the world, and he’s been a featured speaker at TEDx.

Conley has been honored with the 2012 Pioneer Award—hospitality’s highest recognition—and the San Francisco Business Times named him the Most Innovative CEO. He received his BA and MBA from Stanford University and holds an Honorary Doctorate in Psychology from Saybrook University. Conley served on the Glide Memorial Board for nearly a decade and received its Cecil Williams Legacy Award in 2015. He is now on the boards of the Burning Man Project, the Esalen Institute, and NeueHouse.

In 2013, Conley joined Airbnb as head of global hospitality & strategy, and he founded Fest300 to share his passion for travel and the world’s best festivals.

Conley believes the most neglected fact in business is that we're all human, and business schools don't do enough to help us understand that creating peak experiences for stakeholders can create peak performance for a company. Conley shows participants how the PEAK model can be used to understand how a company relates to relationships beyond those with employees and customers—such as investors, vendors, and the community.
