- Vernice Armour’s step-by-step process helps people break down barriers that may be destroying their life and stalling their success.
From beat cop to combat pilot in just three years, Vernice Armour has lived her life defying the odds and breaking through barriers. As the United States’ first African-American female combat pilot, asking permission is not part of Armour’s vocabulary, and her life of “firsts” clearly shows it. She also has the distinction of being the first the U.S. Marine Corps’ first African-American female pilot, and the first African-American female police officer in Tempe, Arizona, and on the Nashville police motorcycle squad.
Armour’s call to serve was modeled early in life—her grandfather was one of the first African Americans to segregate the Marine Corps in the 1940s—and her father and stepfather were also in the military. While at Middle Tennessee State University in the early 1990s, she enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve and the ROTC program. After a brief break from college to serve on the Nashville police force, she graduated in 1997, worked for the Tempe police department, and then joined the U.S. Marines as an officer candidate.
Her impressive military career began in 2001 when Armour graduated from flight school at the top of her class. While stationed at Camp Pendleton, she was named Female Athlete of the Year and twice won the annual Strongest Warrior Competition. In March 2003, she was part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, where she was recognized as the United States’ first African-American female combat pilot. She served two combat tours in Iraq, and left the military in 2007. She has been awarded numerous medals and decorations, including the Navy Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy.
Amour then launched VAI Consulting and Training, a million-dollar company built on her Zero to BreakthroughTM Success Model to help people live with a breakthrough mentality. In 2011, she published Zero to Breakthrough: The 7-Step, Battle-Tested Method for Accomplishing Goals that Matter, a biography that outlines the process she used to excel in leadership.
Today, Armour speaks to audiences worldwide, encouraging leaders to take risks and make decisions rather than wait for someone to give them permission. She has two honorary doctorates, is a member of the COMCAST/NBC Universal Joint Diversity Council, and has been interviewed and featured extensively in the media. Armour tackled another first in 2015 when she became a first-time mother to a baby girl.

Vernice “Fly Girl” Armour has lived her life breaking through barriers, not waiting for permission. Combining her intelligence and easy sense of humor, Armour calls on her experience as a combat pilot and military leader to talk with audiences about:
Her stories about moments in her life that defined her future inspire audiences to see every moment of their life as preparation for the next phase, and to embrace leadership as an action rather than just a title.
