- Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar has worked with hundreds of people and organizations to help them identify their roadblocks to happiness, and how to find lasting happiness.
- Everyone is looking for happiness, but positive psychology expert Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar says that most people are looking for it in the wrong places. Through years of study, research and consultation with thousands of people and organizations, Ben-Shahar has developed tools and guidelines for finding lasting and meaningful happiness.
- Incorporating a combination of academic, yet applicable, content, Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar delivers a fast-paced, humorous and information-packed session designed to cause participants to think, then act, on Ben-Shahar’s concepts of finding happiness.
Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar is one of those rare people who knows his purpose in life—to bring happiness to others. He was supposed to be a computer scientist. But his college studies didn’t excite him, so he made a change that led him on an entirely new journey to specialize in positive psychology or the science of happiness.
Ben-Shahar earned a B.A. in Philosophy and Psychology, and a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Harvard University. As a lecturer at Harvard, he created the most popular course in the school’s history—positive psychology—attracting 1,400 students or approximately 20 percent of its undergraduates. Today, Ben-Shahar consults and lectures around the world about leadership, happiness, education, innovation, ethics, self-esteem, resilience and goal setting.
He is the author of four books, including his most recent, Choose the Life You Want: The Mindful Way to Happiness, and The New York Times bestseller Happier: Learn the Secrets to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment. He also has written two children’s books in Hebrew; one about Hellen Keller and the other about Thomas Edison. Several of his books have been translated into 25 languages.
In 2011, Ben-Shahar co-founded Potentialife, a company that provides leadership programs based on the science of behavioral change. He also founded or co-founded The Wholebeing Institute, Maytiv, and Happier.TV.
An avid sportsman, Ben-Shahar won the U.S. Intercollegiate and Israeli National squash championships.
Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar’s programs are a combination of thought-provoking, funny, academic and practical. Says Ben-Shahar of his speeches: “I create a bridge between the ivory tower and Main Street by translating the rigorous research conducted in universities into accessible material that most people can apply in their personal and professional lives.”
Ben-Shahar’s focus is on enhancing wellbeing, and his approach draws from psychology, organizational behavior, education and philosophy. Participants always get a lot of information and inspiration from his presentations. One of the lists of practical tools Ben-Shahar likes to share is his “Six Tips for Happiness”:
1. Give yourself permission to be human.
2. Happiness lies at the intersection between pleasure and meaning.
3. Happiness is mostly dependent on our state of mind, not on our status or the state of our bank account.
4. Simplify.
5. Remember the mind-body connection.
6. Express gratitude.
Positive Psychology: The Science of Happiness
Positive Psychology, "the scientific study of optimal human functioning," provides practical tools for better living. This new subfield within psychology is unique in that it creates a bridge between the Ivory Tower and Main Street -- making rigorous academic ideas easily accessible. In this session, Ben-Shahar discusses current research related to the science of happiness and introduces ideas and tools that can actually make you happier. He covers topics including giving ourselves the permission to be human, simplifying our lives, recognizing the mind-body connection, and re-focusing on the positive.
Positive Leadership: Strategies for Success
Most organizational and individual potential is untapped. Talented individuals are attracted to and thrive in organizations that bring out the best in them. Ben-Shahar discusses how leaders can create a positive environment that nurtures their inherent potential, as well as the potential in those with whom they work. Ben-Shahar presents research and practices from the world of Appreciative Inquiry, and the Strengths-based Approach to Leadership and Organizational Development and illustrates how to blend them into an approach that underpins extraordinary rather than ordinary outcomes, and enables people to reach fulfillment, happiness, wellbeing, and success.
Positive Psychology for Difficult Times
The economic crises, the ongoing market pressures, the globalization of our village, make the task of the leader increasingly difficult. The effective leader is able to be tough and demanding while being respectful, to trust employees while taking responsibility for the outcome, to focus on strengths while learning to manage weaknesses, juggling the day-to-day challenges while keeping an eye on the vision. To be successful in this taxing environment, the leader must be resilient—to face the challenges and bounce back from setbacks.
