- Winner of two Academy Awards for her roles in Klute (1972) and Coming Home (1978).
- A veteran of the film and television industry with over 60 years of success in roles ranging from drama to comedy.
- Lifelong advocate of women’s rights and other progressive political issues.
- Dedicated proponent of living each stage of our lives to its fullest, from the tricky years of adolescence to the “third act” that characterizes our later decades.
Academy Award-winning actress Jane Fonda has lived the life of an artist, an activist, a fitness advocate, and an author. A champion of living well in every stage of our life journey, Fonda continues to offer her considerable talents on the screen and the wisdom garnered from her rich experiences with print and live audiences.
The daughter of famous American actor Henry Fonda, Jane Fonda studied art in Paris and did some modeling work before deciding to follow in her father’s footsteps. She co-starred with her father in The Country Girl in 1954, studying her craft with Lee Strasberg at the iconic Actors Studio in the years following. She took on a wide variety of roles over the next few decades, earning Oscars for her work on Klute (1972) and Coming Home (1978). Other notable roles included Barbarella (1968), They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? (1969), The China Syndrome (1979), and On Golden Pond (1982).
An outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War, Fonda became a controversial figure for her 1972 visit to North Vietnam. Fonda’s antiwar stand, however, was just one component of her broader social activism, which has included stalwart support for civil rights and the rights of women.
During the 1980s Fonda found herself at the heart of the emerging aerobic exercise trend. She produced a highly successful series of aerobic exercise videos and has continued to be a strong advocate of movement and physical fitness, expanding her focus over time to include low-impact workouts geared toward participants of all ages and fitness levels. More recently Fonda has written bestselling books on aging well (Prime Time, 2012) and offering important advice to teenagers (Being a Teen, 2014).
Fonda remains a sought-after actress well into her 70s. Her recent film roles include 2013’s The Butler and 2015’s Youth, for which she earned a Golden Globe nomination. Television audiences have enjoyed her diverse talents on HBO’s dramatic series The Newsroom and the Netflix comedy series Grace and Frankie.
Jane Fonda is a woman of many talents. While perhaps best recognized as an award-winning actor, her intellect and curiosity about human development have taken her far beyond the silver screen and into the world of cutting-edge research into how we grow, develop, and age.
As founder of the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention and Emory University’s Jane Fonda Center for Adolescent Reproductive Health, Fonda has become one of our nation’s leading advocates on behalf of teenagers. Fonda offers clear-eyed, scientifically informed perspective on the unique challenges teens face, from identity and friendship to sexuality and their changing bodies.
Fonda’s expertise, however, is not limited to adolescence; her thirst for insight has propelled her into the realms of body image and of aging, as well. A recognized leader in our developing consciousness of the “third act” that follows mid-life in this age of longer life spans, Fonda helps audiences understand their later years as a time of growth, opportunity, and continuing development. Challenging outdated visions of aging as a slide toward decrepitude, Fonda substitutes a robust vision of our “third act” as a fruitful and fulfilling stage of life.
In addition, Fonda is happy to share tales of her own multifaceted life and the lessons borne of her many experiences. Fonda’s inspiring story leaves audiences encouraged by her example to live each stage of their own lives to its fullest.
One of the most well known women of our time, Jane Fonda brings her passion for equal rights and healthy living to her informative and upbeat programs. Having dedicated decades to women’s activism both on and off screen, she frequently speaks on youth development, women’s issues, and embracing the final decades of life. Fonda’s openness balanced with her natural warmth make for valuable presentations on sensitive topics.
