Pat Riley′s resume is filled with many milestones during an NBA career that spans 39 years as a player, assistant coach, head coach, administrator, broadcaster and producer of seven NBA championships. Riley is a seven-time National Basketball Association World Champion and reached the 1,000 victory plateau more quickly than any other Coach or Manager in the 4 major North American professional sports leagues.

Riley currently stands as the all-time leader in both regular season and postseason victories for both the Lakers and the Heat. As a result of his many accomplishments, during the NBA’s 50th Anniversary, Riley was named by the media as one of the Top 10 Coaches of All-Time, one of the highest honors bestowed upon an NBA coach. Pat Riley Commencement Address
Play Video

In this university commencement address, Pat Riley first congratulates the sea of new graduates on their achievement. Second, he congratulates the parents, teachers, and coaches behind the grads who helped them get here. Riley pulls together stories of his own experiences being coached while growing up and then his own impressive 46 years of coaching others for a motivational speech on the challenges that will soon face these young adults.

Using an only too appropriate basketball reference, Riley tells the apprehensive story of how the Miami Heat was able to win the NBA World Championship Series in the last 28.6 seconds of the final game. This success was possible because the players relied on the repetition of doing something 10,000 times, to the point where they knew exactly what they were doing. Riley shares this story to prove that when the moment of truth comes around, you need to have already prepared for it. “You get the chance to make or miss on the things that you do in your life.”

After talking about what it takes for a person to help themselves succeed, he moves to talking about what it takes to help someone else succeed. He ends with the analogy of an eagle mother teaching her babies how to fly. She asks herself, “Why does the thrill of soaring always have to begin with the fear of falling?” Despite her own fears and her eaglets’, the “push” out of the nest, is necessary for her children to discover their wings and be able to fly on their own. That is the supreme act of love for any parent, teacher, leader, or decision maker.
