Entrepreneur, programmer, and Silicon Valley royalty Steve Wozniak is best known for founding Apple, Inc. with partner Steve Jobs. Wozniak, or “Woz” as he is often referred, made incredible strides in developing the personal computer, and created a company that still heavily dominates and sets precedents in the technology industry today.
The first time technology changed Wozniak’s life came during his freshman year at the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1969, when he hacked into the university’s computer system and was subsequently expelled. Wozniak’s sharp mind and strong technological abilities may have taken him back a step with that incident, but it was still a step closer to the explosive success that he would eventually come to achieve. After completing his degree in electrical engineering and computer science at the University of California, Berkeley, he worked at Hewlett-Packard designing calculators. It was around that time that Wozniak met Steve Jobs. At the time, Jobs was still in high school, working at Hewlett-Packard for the summer. Eventually they went into business together, launching Apple, Inc.
Wozniak developed the Apple I personal computer in 1976. He and Jobs founded Apple Computer, Inc. that same year. Wozniak’s innovative drive led him to create the Apple II personal computer the very next year, which included a central processing unit, a keyboard, and a floppy disk drive. Wozniak’s groundbreaking creations heavily influenced the development and eventual widespread use of the personal computer around the world.
Wozniak left Apple in 1985. He subsequently became involved with philanthropy, focusing especially on technology and creativity in education. Wozniak’s achievements have been recognized with such awards as: the National Medal of Technology in 1985; the Heinz Award for Technology, the Economy, and Employment; and a place in the Inventors Hall of Fame. He has also published a bestselling autobiography titled, iWoz: From Computer Geek to Cult Icon.
