- Epitomizing an entrepreneurial and fearless spirit, he has created a completely new professional sports medicine industry, taken a basketball team from last place to the championships, founded a multi-million dollar fitness business, and led expeditions to search for lost pirate ships.
- From creating a career—and industry—that previously didn’t exist to buying into a last place team to take them to the top, his approach to life, as well as his storytelling, is full of energy, passion and positivity.
- Croce’s passion for life, exciting way of telling stories, and his variety of life experiences and adventures make him an ideal presenter to motivate and encourage his audience to step out of their comfort zone and embrace opportunities.
- He is the former president and athletic trainer for the Philadelphia 76ers, first physical conditioning coach in the NHL, founder of a $40 million physical therapy/fitness business, owner of multiple business properties, author, and pirate ship expeditionist.
Pat Croce is one of the first people to go from a training room to the boardroom of a professional sports team. Since making that move, Croce has increased his holdings and grown his brand to not only include the Philadelphia 76ers, but restaurants and properties in south Florida. In 2014, Croce had a net worth of $300 million.
He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in health and rehabilitation sciences in 1977 and tried multiple times to become the Philadelphia Eagles’ team physical therapist. But his requests were ignored. With the combination of his education and martial arts prowess (he has a 4th degree black belt in karate and is an international champion), he soon captured the attention of the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team. In 1980, he became the first physical conditioning coach in the NHL.
Several years later, the Philadelphia 76ers called on Croce to bring his physical therapy and conditioning magic to their team. In many ways, Croce created the idea of personal training before there was a name for it. While working as the athletic trainer for the Philadelphia 76ers for a decade, Croce also built Sports Physical Therapists, an empire that grew to 40 centers in 11 states in less than 10 years. His network expanded through his connections with the 76ers and Flyers and his popular fitness and nutrition segments on Philadelphia media in the 1980s and 90s. In 1993, he sold the business for $40 million.
In 1996, he became president of the 76ers as part of a group that purchased the team. Under their ownership, the team went from last place to the NBA finals in 2001. Croce resigned after that season. Since then, Croce has been a television commentator on the NBA and a taekwondo commentator for the 2004 Summer Olympics. In 2005, he opened the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum in Florida, which features authentic pirate artifacts, many from Croce's personal collection. Croce also owns and operates the Colonial Quarter living-history museum in St. Augustine, as well as a number of restaurants and properties in Key West. Croce has authored six pirate-themed books and is working on a series of historical fiction books based on the lives of pirates such as Sir Francis Drake and Henry Morgan. In 2011, he financed and served on the monumental expedition that located the shipwrecks of Sir Francis Drake.
His second book I Feel Great and You Will Too! made The New York Times Best Seller list almost immediately. The autobiography chronicles his college years, meeting his wife, starting his own business, purchasing the Sixers, and his 1999 motorcycle accident, and is full of career and personal advice. His other books include: 110%, Lead Or Get Off The Pot, Pat Croce's Victory Journal, and the Do It Now! Journal.
