Jennifer Pahlka is the Founder and Executive Director of non-profit organization Code for America. Described by the Washington Post as, “the technology world’s equivalent of the Peace Corps or Teach for America,” Code for America is a network of thousands of tech-savvy volunteers who technologically renovate existing government systems and websites. These volunteers also create new programs that help feed the hungry, reduce unnecessary incarceration, and redesign workforce training.
After Pahlka graduated from Yale University, she started her career in tech at CMP Media, where she oversaw the fast growth of the company for eight years. She went on to become the Executive Director of the International Game Developers Association and later the Co-Chair and General Manager of the Web 2.0 events for TechWeb, where she created the Web 2.0 Expo. From 2013 to 2014, she was the Deputy Chief of Technology Officer for the Office of Science and Technology Policy. In the position, she led the way as a pioneer of government innovation in technology, helping found the United States Digital Service.
Pahlka has been recognized for her groundbreaking work in government and technology with awards such as MIT’s Kevin Lynch Award, the Oxford Internet Institute’s Internet and Society Award, and the National Democratic Institute’s Democracy Award.
