  • Musk’s company Tesla Motors has overseen the design of several energy-efficient vehicles including the Tesla Roadster, the Model S and the Model X. Presently, Tesla Motors is valued at over $25 billion.
  • He is the chief designer at SpaceX; the company’s rockets and spacecraft served as commercial replacements for the cargo transport function of the Space Shuttle between 2008 and 2011.
  • A supporter of higher education, Musk holds a physics degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and a business degree from Wharton.
Short Bio
As the CEO and architect behind Tesla Motors, Elon Musk is considered one of the most innovative minds of the modern world. He is an inventor, investor and entrepreneur with specialized knowledge in the fields of transportation, renewable energy, and space travel.

Prior to his time with Tesla, Musk made a name for himself as the CEO of PayPal, arguably the most widely-used online financial platform existing today. Other business venues include Space X, SolarCity, and the design of the “Hyperloop,” a high-speed train system that once constructed, could potentially take L.A. residents as far north as San Francisco in a mere 35 minutes. Presently, Musk has set his sights on a new venture: colonizing other planets and making them safe for human life.

Extended Bio
Elon co-founded Tesla and continues to oversee the company's product strategy -- including the design, engineering and manufacturing of more and more affordable electric vehicles for mainstream consumers. As Chairman and Product Architect, he helped design the ground-breaking Tesla Roadster, for which he won an Index and a Global Green award, the latter presented by Mikhail Gorbachev. In October 2008, he took on the additional responsibility of CEO, overseeing daily operations as the company was ramping up Roadster production and accelerating the development of its second vehicle, the Model S.

Elon launched Tesla's regional sales and service centers across two continents and in May 2009 secured a $50 million investment and strategic partnership from Germany's Daimler. He spearheaded a successful cost-down program that enabled Tesla to achieve profitability in July 2009. He guides development of the Model S, the all-electric family sedan that is produced at the Tesla Factory in Northern California.

Elon has been fascinated by electric cars for two decades. After earning bachelor's degrees in physics and business from the University of Pennsylvania, he worked briefly on ultracapacitors at Pinnacle Research in Silicon Valley to understand their potential as an energy storage mechanism for EVs. He planned to do graduate studies at Stanford in materials science and applied physics but put school on hold to start Internet companies Zip2 and PayPal. In addition to his Tesla duties, he serves as CEO and CTO of SpaceX, and he's Chairman of SolarCity.

Elon Musk giving a commencement speech at USC in California. In the beginning, Musk discusses the notion of working hard, and tells graduates about the time he started his first company. He and his business partner were so short on cash that rather than renting an apartment, they slept on the couches in the office they had leased, and took turns using the one computer they could afford. He does not look back at that time with regret or anger. Rather, he advises audience members to walk a similar path. If they wish to do well or start a project they can be proud of, they must never give up on working hard. It’s a seven-day-a-week gig.

Musk then discusses the notion of working with others. He says that whether you’re starting a company or simply joining one, you should try to surround yourself with great people; people you like and who work hard along with you. A company is merely a group of people that have gathered together to create and/or offer a product or service, and if they all share the same ideals, the products or services being offered are likely to excel.

In the final moments of the speech, Musk advises his listeners to take risks and to always strive to create something original, rather than just follow the trend. He says this can be difficult at first, because what you do many appear out of the ordinary to others, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. Entrepreneurs must listen to themselves and ask themselves if what they do really makes sense, or if it’s just part of a current trend. Going against the grain is the only way to ensure one’s success and place in society.

PROGRAMS

Musk offers a wide array of speaking programs regarding renewable energy and environmental issues. In a recent program/speech in Detroit, Musk offered his audience education regarding electric vehicles, and encouraged competing carmakers to invest in electric vehicles and other forms of transportation that can shy away from fossil fuels.

Musk also speaks about the cost of oil. Presently, oil in America is cheaper than it was in 2008, but Musk issues warnings and tells his audience not to get too comfortable. Gas prices may be low, but a world without fossil fuels is the only “acceptable” world, in his eyes. Electric vehicles are the way of the future, and can give later generations the cleaner, healthier environment to survive.

Musk also criticizes fracking efforts in America, which he says hurt the environment, and are part of an elaborate farce to convince the public that fossil fuels are the only true forms of energy in the country. According to Musk, all fracking does is bring gas and oil prices down. It doesn’t prepare us for the future that’s bound to happen when these resources run out. In the end, should these efforts continue, gas and oil sources will dissipate, and the environment is likely to suffer.
