Actress Angela Bassett has made a career out of playing some of the most well-known real-life black female pioneers during the last 25 years. In addition to her Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe-winning performance as Tina Turner in the biopic “What's Love Got to Do with It,” she has portrayed Betty Shabazz in “Malcolm X” and “Panther,” Rosa Parks in “The Rosa Parks Story,” Coretta Scott King in “Betty and Coretta,” Katherine Jackson in “The Jacksons: An American Dream,” and Voletta Wallace in “Notorious.”
Bassett was born in Harlem, but raised in the St. Petersburg, Florida, area by a single mother. She was an outstanding student during some turbulent years as St. Petersburg transitioned from segregation to integration. She attended seventh grade in 1970, the first year bussing was implemented to integrate public schools there. She received a scholarship to Yale University, and graduated from there in 1980 with a B.A. in African-American studies, and in 1983, she earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Yale School of Drama. She was the only member of her family to have graduated from college and graduate school. Bassett met her husband, Courtney B. Vance, at Yale, and they married in 1997. Their twins were born in 2006.
Bassett has had more than 80 film and TV appearances in her 25-year career. Her breakout performances were in “Boyz in the Hood” (1991) and “Malcolm X” (1992). She has received more than 50 award nominations from various entertainment organizations. Her performance as Tina Turner in “What's Love Got to Do with It” (1993) has been ranked number 95 on Premiere Magazine's list of the 100 greatest film performances of all time. Bassett received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2008.
She most recently was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie for her performances in “American Horror Story.” Bassett made her directorial debut with “Whitney,” a biopic that chronicled the long-time relationship between Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown. The film premiered on Lifetime in 2015 to 4.5 million viewers and became the network’s most-watched telecast in more than a year. She is the author of Friends: A Love Story about her relationship with her husband.
Bassett is a supporter of youth arts programs in her hometown, and is an active ambassador of UNICEF for the U.S.
