- Academy and Golden Globe Award-winning actress.
- Founder of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in the Media.
- Fervent advocate of gender equality and female empowerment throughout the world.
- Witty and acerbic critic of gender inequity and stereotyping in children’s media.
Academy Award-winning actress Geena Davis has portrayed the president of the United States and a housewife on the run, a ghost and even a mouse, but perhaps her greatest role is as an advocate of gender equality in the media. Davis believes girls and women should be represented equitably on our screens. Equitable representation means more roles – and better roles! – for girls and women. To further this goal she founded and chairs the non-profit Geena Davis Institute on Gender in the Media. This organization advocates for increasing the percentage of female characters we see onscreen and reducing gender stereotyping, especially in media that targets children aged 11 and under.
In addition, in 2015 Davis founded the Bentonville Film Festival (BFF), an innovative program supporting women and diversity in the entertainment industry. The BFF provides important economic foundations for projects that are produced by and star minorities and women, providing guaranteed theatrical, television, digital, and home entertainment distribution for projects that win BFF awards.
While Davis focuses much of her advocacy upon the entertainment industry, support for women and girls in all walks of life is her chief priority. In 2012, she was appointed Special Envoy for Women and Girls by the United Nations’ International Telecommunication Union. She partners with UN Women, an organization charged with promoting gender equality and empowering women around the world. Davis also chairs the California Commission on the Status of Women.
Davis’ acting plaudits include an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in the 1989 film The Accidental Tourist and the 2006 Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series Drama for her portrayal of the first female president in ABC’s “Commander in Chief.” She is also noted for her roles in such iconic films as A League of Their Own, Thelma and Louise, Tootsie, Beetlejuice, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and Stuart Little. In addition to her acting prowess, Davis is also an accomplished athlete; in 2001, she was ranked 13th in the world in archery.
Geena Davis is a dedicated advocate and supporter of opportunities for women and girls to meet their full potential. A witty and acerbic critic of gender inequity in the media, Davis offers insights born of both experience in the industry and scientific research into the significant disparities that continue to exist between depictions of men and women.
Davis first became aware of how few examples of strong and capable girls existed in children’s media, specifically, when she began watching these programs with her young daughter. Going to friends and industry colleagues in search of validation of her concerns, she was routinely told others did not see gender disparity as a problem – or that it had already “been fixed.” Unconvinced, Davis sponsored a research study that determined just one female character existed for every three male characters portrayed in children’s media productions. David had exposed a significant problem – and she’s gone on to become one of the most strident and informed voices advocating for girls and women in the media today.
Davis’ skillful storytelling is underpinned by concrete factual support that informs, enlightens, and empowers audiences to recognize gender inequity and advocate against this enduring problem. Davis’ stage presence is predictably powerful; her content is second to none in terms of both clarity and strength
